Sonya Spielberg

Sonya is the Founder of Camp Jojo and co-chair of the fundraising committee. She is the proud mother of Jordana Nicole Greenberg (Jojo) for whom the camp is named. Sonya is a practicing labor lawyer with the federal government, an adjunct professor at the University of Texas Law School and a passionate advocate for suicide prevention. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia and William and Mary Law School. Sonya’s Camp Jojo name is “Mama Hummingbird” and the camps since 2019 have been the most positive and life-changing experiences of her life. Sonya lives in Austin, Texas, with Charlie, her dog, her cat Spencer and, occasionally, her daughter Carina.

 

Kevin Hackman

Kevin Hackman is Camp Jojo's Executive Director. He brings more than 20 years of nonprofit experience through his role of Development Director at Cancer Family Care, and past roles at Camp Joy, an outdoor education center near Cincinnati, Ohio, and the American Diabetes Association. Kevin has served on a number of nonprofit boards, including the American Diabetes Association and Young Nonprofit Professionals Network. Kevin earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Xavier University as well as a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Duke University. Kevin and his wife Erin, a school counselor, are both avid runners and travelers. They live in Cincinnati with their children Wyatt, Cecilia and dog Zeus and all enjoy hiking and exploring in nature.

Janine Lewis 

Janine is Camp JoJo’s board secretary. Her motivation for volunteering for Camp JoJo comes from experiencing depression and suicide as a caregiver, mother, family member and close friend. Janine is a certified genetic counselor and program director who works as a contractor for the National Institutes of Health to support individuals and families living with rare and/or genetic diseases including cancer. She has an MS in Human Genetics from Sarah Lawrence College. She lives in Silver Spring, MD and has a daughter and son in the process of adulting.

 

Theresa Stattel  

Theresa serves as Camp Jojo’s board treasurer. She’s a wiz with numbers having worked as an economist and budget analyst for the Federal government the last thirty years. Her involvement in Camp Jojo is motivated by Sonya’s bright light and her own experience with the challenges facing mentally ill individuals beginning in childhood as the daughter of someone with schizophrenia. 


Sarah Blow

Sarah works with Camp Jojo’s communications and marketing program. She graduated from Liberty University, where she studied Business Communications and Marketing. She works as a marketing strategist for Octagon, which is a creative agency specializing in sports, entertainment, experiences, and sponsorship. Her experience includes managing social media, communications, website development, and special project for both for-profit and non-profit organizations. She is passionate about helping young adults learn to navigate the world of mental health, and gains joy and inspiration from her cousin Jojo’s love for other people.

 

Stephanie Heitkemper

Stephanie Heitkemper, MA MFT, LPC, RPT, FT specializes in supporting those who have experienced grief and trauma in their lives. Stephanie is passionate about mental health and mental health education. Over the past decade Stephanie has been involved with bereavement camps across the nation, helping children and teens use nature along with the camp experience to explore their grief. Stephanie believes in the power of connection, hope and healing that Camp Jojo brings to teens grieving a suicide loss. Stephanie lives outside Denver with husband and 2 boxers..

 

Freya Spielberg

Freya Spielberg MD MPH is a Family Medicine Physician and an innovator of new models of care that help people achieve integrated physical, emotional, spiritual and social health. She received her MD from Cornell University Medical Center, and her MPH from the University of Washington through a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars fellowship. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas in Austin. After losing her beautiful and talented niece Jojo to suicide in 2017, Dr. Spielberg decided to use her skills to develop new suicide prevention programs for adolescents.

Julie Jubeir

Julie Jubeir is the head of Camp Jojo’s fundraising efforts. Her motivation for volunteering for Camp Jojo comes from seeing the devastation caused by the loss of a daughter and the loss of a mother. Julie’s career spans the areas of private equity, consulting firms, and a nonprofit. She holds an MBA from Kellogg, a General Course degree from the London School of Economics, and an AB from Bowdoin College. Julie lives in the Washington, DC, area with her husband and two cats. She has a son and a daughter in college.

 

Cat Scanlan

Cat was Jojo's counselor at Keystone Science School where she was lucky enough to meet her and her entire family. Throughout the camp years, she watched as Jojo grew into a young woman and loved watching her shine in every aspect of life. When she heard about Camp Jojo Cat knew she wanted to be involved in any way she possibly could. With a background in camp and marketing, she knew she could help Camp Jojo thrive. Cat supports public relations and communications and loves helping with social media. She loves showing people just how amazing Camp Jojo truly is. Her camp song is "This Must be the Palace" by The Talking Heads..
